Would I be the asshole if I betrayed my best friend because he isn’t paying attention to me anymore?

There’s this idiot who’s been clinging to me since middle school, I’ll call him M. In middle school he used to call me amazing all the time and we had all these plans to take on the world and show everyone that we weren’t just powerless kids. M was always useless without me, I was the one always telling him what to do and he agreed that my plans were the best even though it’s not like I needed to hear that. Anyway we had this one big plan that got ruined and some other guy had to step in and save me (edit: us). We ended up joining this group that was supposed to give us power but everyone there is so useless and lazy, the guy in charge just sleeps all day and still M keeps calling him amazing. It’s obvious I don’t belong there with those morons but M can’t ever admit it, he just stares at our lazy leader all day long wagging his tail like some yappy dog. Even the only guy with any sense in the group keeps telling me stupid stuff like ‘I want you to always stay here,’ which he wouldn’t say if he thought I actually fit in, it’s clear no one wants me here but M can’t see it. He’s supposed to be looking at me and now it’s like I’m not even here, every time he asks me to go to do something I tell him no and he just shrugs like it’s nothing and asks some fatty to accompany him instead.

Anyway, I got a job offer the other day and I’m thinking of leaving and joining this other team. The thing is, the job I’m thinking of taking is at odds with the group I’m in now. I think our leader suspects but of course he doesn’t care at all, why would he. But I want to be sure M cares, so that he knows I had to leave because our friendship is obviously already over. I’ve been thinking of doing something big, so that he’ll really hate me. WIBTA if I burned something precious to him and tried to goad him into killing me? It feels like this is pretty much the only sensible course of action I can take right now to make him pay attention, it’s obviously his fault anyway. WIBTA?

Am I Overreacting by trying to get my ex best friend to fight with me?

A few months ago I had a bad breakup with a former childhood friend, we’ll call him Blossom. We used to be really close but he stopped caring about me and I took a new job, I’m not typing it all out again, check my post history if you care that much. Anyway, this new job is fine, my coworkers are morons and my boss is irritating but he gives me a lot of freedom. Sometimes my path crosses with Blossom just in the regular course of things. The other day I saw him walking around smiling and laughing, like I hadn’t even left. He hasn’t even made a single attempt to get a job at the same place as me either, it’s like he’s not even trying to chase me at all. It’s not a big deal to me but it’s annoying because he’s acting so stupid that it pisses me off and makes me want to do something drastic. 

I’m thinking of just following him around secretly and goading him into fights whenever possible. I don’t really want to hurt him — much, and anyway I want him to hurt me more — I just want to remind him how it’s all his fault that I’m gone and he doesn’t get to forget me that easily. If I don’t do this then I won’t be able to get him to hate me, and it’s important that I’m the guy he hates the most. AIO by trying to get him to notice me a little more?

How do you know if someone actually likes you?

This is such a pain but I guess I need advice. I have this former childhood friend, we’ll call him Idiot Virgin. We had a falling out a few years ago but now we’re back together again. He said he was excited that we can be friends again but lately I’ve started to realize that I care about him in a way that’s more than friendship. I guess it’s something like love, who knows. I just want him to look at me more than anyone else and it makes my heart beat a little faster when he smiles. He’s a total moron and uselessly energetic and is so stupidly honest that he’s hard to handle. Everything he says is either zero or one hundred points and lately I keep feeling like every time he talks to me it’s one hundred.

Clearly I can’t tell Idiot Virgin this though, because if he doesn’t feel the same way we won’t ever be able to talk again. I’ve been trying to think of ways to get him to admit that he likes me, so that I know it’s safe to tell him that I like him. The problem is I already did something once that really hurt him and I don’t really want to do that again, because then he’ll really hate me and I don’t think I could handle that this time. Maybe I just won’t say anything, these stupid feelings will go away eventually right? If he wasn’t such a virgin it would be easier to know how he feels, but he keeps blushing every time I get too close and it’s impossible to say what that means. Does anyone have any suggestions that aren’t stupid for how to get someone else to confess first?

long story short, i found out about this site called buyee, which is essentially a service that gives you access to buy items from these online marketplaces in japan (yahoo auctions japan, mercari, rakuten, etc.).

i first snooped into mercari and snagged both the gameboy cartridge and the carddass for around 10 USD each. i was pretty shocked that i somehow got these easily (and at low prices too), and so i thought, that garage kit maker, planeswalker, who recreated ariga's version of enker last year...i wonder if some of their kits are also sold here? so i went searching. they weren't present in the search results of mercari, but i managed to find them on yahoo auctions japan, namely, some of their garage kits of battle network and star force mega man and... a garage kit of ariga's version of punk that had just been made this past summer. and through some more investigating, i found the garage kit for ariga's enker. immediately placed a bid for enker and managed to be the only bidder there, then i bidded on punk and also managed to be the only bidder for him too.

in terms of price, each of the garage kits were around 120-130 USD on yahoo auctions japan, which is... reasonable? i don't have a solid sense on what pricing is proper enough for resin kits in general, but considering the make and well, the scarcity of these garage kits, i figured these prices were just right. (i didn't get them directly from planeswalker by the way, it just so happened that the scalpers who were bulk buying resin kits from sculptors at wonder festival were selling them for pretty reasonable prices on yahoo auctions japan, but also... jacking them up on amazon japan and ebay US?)

(oh, can't also forget the really expensive shipping; for what i got, it all costed around 60 USD in total for shipping, which includes the shipping from each seller to buyee's warehouse, and the shipping for the consolidated package to my home.)

by the way, i've been constantly looking to see if more of planeswalker's kits are being sold on yahoo auctions japan; you can look into it yourself of course, but currently there's another kit of ariga's punk patiently waiting to be purloined here. i got the punk kit with all of the pieces intact from that same seller, in case you're unsure on whether or not they'll give you the kit once you win the auction.

Yahoo Groups Will Be Shutting Down - What Each of You Can Do (Updated Nov 17, 2019)

Yahoo Groups will be shutting down key features and restricting access to Groups, with user-uploaded content being deleted on December 14, 2019. With this shutdown, decades of fandom history will vanish. But there is something that every member of the fandom community can do now - whether they’ve ever used Yahoo Groups before or not.

I am a member of a Yahoo group - what can I do?

Immediately contact the admins to find out what their plans are.

Submit a request to Yahoo for an export of your Yahoo Groups.  Do this before Dec 1, 2019 as it will take weeks to prepare. Don’t wait for your admins or other group members to act.

Tell your moderators and other Yahoo Group members about PGOffline, a Windows tool that will save the files, photos and messages. Any member of the Yahoo Group can use this tool - you do not have to be an admin to save the mailing list.  The trial version will download only 1000 messages...the license to do a full download is a one time fee of $25. If you cannot afford that fee, scroll down to Section 9 for a free Chrome tool that will download just the messages.

Since many admins are busy or inactive, install the PGOffline yourself and start downloading - focus on Files, Photos, Links, and Messages. A step-by-step walk through is available here and a video tutorial here.

 Export the messages and backup up the files and photos by copying them to another folder on your computer. Then contact Open Doors, the OTW preservation program. The OTW is open to providing storage of Yahoo Groups backups that are assembled by moderators and non-moderators alike. Details are here.

Login Problems?

Has your “inactive” email been purged? Is your email email address not linked to a Yahoo Group ID?

An "inactive" account is one where you haven't sent an email or logged in for the past year. Receiving emails does not count as activity. The email address is then released, and can be used by someone else.

If you used your Yahoo email to subscribe to a mailing list, your access to the Yahoo Group is gone (along with all your emails). If your account was deactivated within the past 90 days, you may be able to reactivate it. (more here). Alternatively, you can try contacting Yahoo Mail support.

Outside the 90 day window: you can try creating a new Yahoo email account using the same screen name as long as no one else has snapped it up. Simply sign up as you would for a 'new' email account. Reclaim an inactive mailbox. Then log into your Yahoo Group.

npm, Inc., is being purchased by GitHub.

The public registry remains public, free, and as available as ever.

npm as you know it continues, and in fact, there is good reason to believe that it'll only get better.

I'm still going to be working on npm (but with the luxury of more resources and less stress).

I'm really excited about the stuff we're going to do.

It is customary for a founder, in the closing chapter of their startup, to ruminate in a blog post about their incredible journey1. When we founded npm, Inc., I knew that I was signing up for a post like this someday. I'm extremely thankful that this is the one I get to write2.

history and origin

Back in 2009, after too long without a vacation, I quit my job, in hopes of discovering what happens when I untether my creativity.

What happened is I wrote a package manager.

I created npm with the goal of sharing modules in a tiny group of nerdy weirdos who'd decided to write web servers in JavaScript. From that niche beginning, npm grew, slowly but surely, the background project I'd greedily steal away time for.

At the end of 2013, npm hit a rough spot and we had to make a decision. This was the first big bookmark in the npm story, when the project could no longer survive on donations. We made some slide decks and raised an amount of money that seemed enormous at the time, but inevitably got spent really fast.

the part where i talk about startups

Running a company is hard. It is grueling, unglamorous work.

I don't want to make it sound completely terrible. There are definitely a few awesome parts. But once is enough for me.

Throughout this journey, our north star has been the mission that we founded this company with: reduce friction in JavaScript software development.

I have a set of goals that I wrote down back then, and have shared openly with the team. They haven't changed much.

Keep the npm registry running forever (not only for the life of the company).

Be a company that we can all enjoy working at, and do the best work of our careers up until now.

Get a big enough exit that I can quit my job and see what comes out of me a second time.

Share the rewards equitably with the people who got npm to where it is.

There are few unmitigated successes or failures in the real world. But this is a win, and a good one, for me and the team and the entire JavaScript community.

We have made tremendous progress on (1), and that's the thing I'm happiest about in this. As far as (2), there's been ups and downs, to say the least, but the bright spots outshine the dark. I've lost some valued friendships in the process, but made a few as well. On (3), well, I'm still working a jobby job, but I always knew that was a long shot, and "make npm a better package manager" is a job I enjoy. And as for (4), I'm proud of the deals that we've been able to negotiate for the team.

It's not a kajillion billion dollar 10x startup cinderella story, and we've taken our hits, but in the end we've done right by our community, team, and careers, and I'm extremely proud of what we've achieved.

the part where i talk about the company buying us

One of the questions founders get asked a lot is "what might your exit look like?" I always mentioned the big tech companies as possibilities, and GitHub as a sort of "wishful thinking" option.

I've been following GitHub's trajectory closely since they came to Yahoo! to give a talk about git and social coding way back in 20093. It's been a huge part of my life ever since I dove head-first into open source as a lifestyle choice.

When I saw the GitHub Packages beta announcement and demo at GitHub HQ in San Francisco, I remember turning to Shanku Niyogi and clumsily blurting out, "Why aren't you trying to buy us?"

It seemed so maddeningly... obvious. Forget about whose logo is on which webpage, just... if you're going to do this thing, do it right, ffs. This clearly needs to be integrated with the actual registry in a very deep way. "I mean... You see that, right?" (I think he probably did. And if he didn't, then props to him for taking my reaction as flattery or a good idea, rather than condescension.)

What I didn't really expect at the beginning of the acquisition process was how much I'd genuinely like everyone I met at GitHub, starting with my initial conversations with Nat, as well as all the people on the team he's built. As we dug into the technical and strategic plans for how npm would fit into the vision of GitHub moving forward, it became clear that this isn't just a good option for the JavaScript community -- it's significantly better than what npm, Inc., can provide on its own.

There are not many companies that can claim to have the kind of fanatical commitment to open source that GitHub does. In the track record of Nat and the team he's assembled, there's really something special here that I'm thrilled to be a part of.

I've said countless times before that I wouldn't let the registry go someplace that won't take care of it. (See goal (1) above. I've sacrificed years of my life and put a strain on many personal and professional relationships in pursuit of that goal.)

As GitHub has branched out into other aspects of the end-to-end developer community experience, it's natural to see how the JavaScript package management process fits into that story. It's not a loss leader or an experimental add-on or a way to quickly hire a team. Rather, the npm registry is a significant and concrete strategic asset serving GitHub's mission of eliminating transaction costs in software development.

That's important.

the part about what comes next

Today, npm serves over 1.3 million packages to roughly 12 million developers, who download these things 75 billion times a month, and all of this is growing at a rate that ensures these massive numbers will seem small in a few years.

Our commitment to that community is to keep the npm registry free for open source development for the foreseeable future, and continue to improve the npm CLI. At GitHub, npm will have the added support and backing of one of the world's largest companies, behind the world's largest community of developers.

There are some awesome opportunities for improvement in the npm experience, to meaningfully improve life for JS devs in countless large and small ways. We'll be making things more reliable, convenient, and connected for everyone across our vast interdependent JavaScript ecosystem.

For six years, in the grind of a startup, we've had dreams too big to dare hope for. This next chapter is a chance to realize those dreams.

Ok well I’m sure people have made like Actual Callout Posts about this person so I’m not gonna like add screenshots to this post or anything (they have a discourse tag on their blog, you can just check for yourself tbh) but here’s the gist:

Basically for a long time GS identified themselves as like sexuality-ambiguous transmasc— iirc they claimed to not be straight but it was clear they were attracted to women, but like a lot of transmascs are bi, so nbd, nobody thought anything of it. The fuckery started when GS made a post that was like “when you find out a cute girl is straight: 😕 when you find out a cute girl is gay: 😕” and everyone was like “yo dude, not cool, complaining about women being lesbians isn’t cool... this is also really fetishistic of bi women...”

GS FLIPPED out. Most people assumed this was like, a case of a het transmasc lamenting that str8 women wouldn’t find them attractive due to being trans (which is a genuine problem het trans people face, cishet people’s transphobia), and that they just did it in a gross and insensitive way where they also brought lesbians into the realm of complaint for no good reason (which I still think is what was at the root of the issue here tbh, a lot of het trans people “forget” that they can’t just complain about people being gay and be absolved from homophobia bc they’re trans or used to ID as gay before transition). But GS insisted that no, this isn’t about them hating lesbians, for you see, they ARE a lesbian! Checkmate atheists!

So, everyone was understandably confused by this. If you’ve been IDing as transmasc for years, and have talked about being stealth as a male camp counselor, they said, how are you a lesbian? You can’t be a lesbian and transmasc. GS explained (after much arguing with lesbians and telling them to shut up and stop overreacting) that they actually never really were transmasc, they’re a nb lesbian, but they felt they didn’t need to explain this to a bunch of yahoos on tumblr because they OBVIOUSLY overestimated our ability to grasp gender complexity 😤.

Understandably, people found it suspicious that this lesbianism revelation only came to light after wlw started calling them out for being lesbophobic and fetishizing bi women, especially given how gung-ho they were about being transmasc and being stealth and whatnot. There had been NO indication of this distance from maleness before (worth noting that up until all this happened they used he/him pronouns; after this incident they switched to they/them). But, many still trying to keep an open mind, said “ok GS, so you’re a cis-aligned lesbian who wanted to medically transition. No big deal, lots of lesbians do that. And maybe you found it easier to let people think you were a man than explain your reasons for wanting to medically transition. But why would you then be complaining about other women being lesbians? If you’re a lesbian, would other lesbians not be a large portion of your dating pool?”

This is where the fuckery gets real thick. GS explained that, you see, they have this NEED to pass as a man. It goes beyond safety or ease of access to medical transition, this is Part Of Their Gender, that they’re a lesbian who needs to be read as a man by most people. Given this, they say, most lesbians who express attraction to them irl would be doing so even though they KNEW that GS wanted to be seen as a man, and thus those lesbians would probably be terfs. And GS doesn’t want to date terfs. So you see, the only viable partners for them are bi women, because str8 women wouldn’t be interested in them as a lesbian, and lesbians would either not be interested bc they’d see GS as a trans man or would only be interested bc they didn’t take GS’s transition seriously. And even if a lesbian by some miracle, with their puny lesbian brain, understood this Gender Complexity©️, all the people GS interacts with irl who think they’re a man would get suspicious at the fact that they were dating a lesbian and thus this hypothetical lesbian gf would ruin the facade of maleness that GS feels compelled to put up in their day to day life.

So, of course everyone was like “🤔 for a lesbian you sure seem awful lesbophobic and disparaging of other lesbians’ understanding of gender. Why would you assume you’re the only lesbian who has a complex relationship to both maleness and femaleness? And beyond that, it really sounds like when you say ‘lesbian’ you’re only thinking about AFAB lesbians.” It’s also confusing that GS seemed intent on positioning themselves in society as a man— to the point of only wanting to date women who are interested in men, because apparently a lesbian simply lying and being like “ah yes, this Man is my Boyfriend” (a thing that lesbian friends of mine who needed to be read as men for safety in certain situations have asked their female-reading lesbian gfs to do without issue) is like not sufficient— but still insists they’re a lesbian at heart. And the way they frame this insistence is “I don’t need to explain my gender complexity to you, tumblr riffraff. But you shouldn’t assume being a lesbian makes me a woman or even woman-aligned, for I Reject Alignment Terminology.”

It seems clear that GS has simply no interest in confronting the material reality of their situation. Like, personally, as a gay transmasc person, this to me reeks of a het transmasc not wanting to accept their (highly context-dependent) ability to access straight and male privilege. Of a het transmasc feeling estranged from the cis norm of straightness and maleness, and thus concluding that they are neither straight nor male, rather than acknowledging that these identities can be complex too. It’s the kind of thing that doesn’t really seem insidious unless you actually ARE both trans and gay or both trans and a woman (or all 3), in which case all you see is yet another example of someone who holds power over you coopting your identity to make themselves feel better about this power.
